À partir de 2004, Harley-Davidson a commencé à utiliser la technologie du circuit électrique multiplexé (CAN bus ou Controller Area Network) permettant le transfert de plusieurs bits de données via un seul fil. Cette évolution technique a permis d’afficher le diagnostic des codes anomalies (DTC ou Diagnostic Trouble Codes) de la moto.
C’est un outil très utile pour vous aider à résoudre d’éventuels problèmes rencontrés sur cette dernière. Il s’applique à l’ensemble des modèles de la gamme avec quelques variantes concernant la mise en œuvre.
Attention : Cet article ne prend pas en compte les motos, qui depuis 2021, sont équipées de l’ECU Delphi MT22.
Étape 1 – Entrer en mode de diagnostic
Pour les Sportsters de 2014 à 2020
• Appuyez et maintenez enfoncé le bouton de choix d’affichage (TRIP) sur la poignée gauche.
• Tout en maintenant le bouton enfoncé (TRIP), mettre le contact (OFF > RUN) sur la poignée droite.
• Relâchez le bouton (TRIP) lorsque l’écran du compteur kilométrique affiche « diag. »
• Presser et relâcher le bouton (TRIP) pour faire défiler les différents modules et codes. Si un module affiche un « Y », un code d’anomalie est présent.
• Appuyez et maintenez le bouton (TRIP) pendant cinq secondes et le code de la panne sera affichée.
• Notez le code d’anomalie pour plus tard.
Pour les Sportsters de 2004 à 2013
– Maintenir enfoncé le bouton de remise à zéro du compteur de vitesse ;
– Mettre la clé sur la position Ignition ;
– Mettre le bouton de contact sur la position RUN.
==> Le cadran du compteur s’allume, l’aiguille fait un va et vient et la petite fenêtre LED affiche DIAG.
– Relâcher le bouton de remise à zéro du compteur de vitesse.
Puis il faut presser à nouveau le bouton de remise à zéro pour pouvoir entrer dans les divers modules :
P ==> ECM / ICM (module de contrôle de l’allumage)
S ==> TSM / TSSM (module de contrôle des clignotants et de l’alarme)
SP ==> compteur de vitesse
T ==> compte-tours (si il y en a un)
On passe, d’un module à l’autre, en appuyant simplement sur le bouton de remise à zéro du compteur de vitesse.
La lettre qui clignote indique le module actif.
Pour lire les codes anomalies du module actif :
– Appuyer 5 secondes sur le bouton de remise à zéro du compteur de vitesse ;
– Faire défiler les différents codes par une pression rapide sur le bouton de remise à zéro du compteur de vitesse.
Pour sortir du mode DIAGNOSTIC, mettre le bouton de contact sur la position OFF ainsi que la clé.
Étape 2 – Vérifier et effacer les codes d’anomalie
• Suivez l’étape 1, puis :
• Appuyez et maintenez enfoncé le bouton (TRIP) pendant cinq secondes pour effacer le code d’anomalie.
• Appuyez sur le bouton (TRIP) pour faire défiler les codes supplémentaires et les autres modules.
• En fin de lecture, couper le contact (RUN > OFF) pour quitter le mode « diag ».

Le DTC présente plusieurs préfixes de code, P, B, C et U.
P indique des problèmes surveillés par l’ECM (Electronic Control Module).
B indique des problèmes surveillés par les instruments et le BCM (Body Control Module).

U indique un problème de communication avec les modules (CAN bus).
